Wilkesboro Area Wineries

The Vineyards of Swan Creek enjoy a unique climate and soil composition conducive to the production of vinifera wine grapes. The foothills of two mighty mountain ranges – the Brushys and the Blue Ridge - kick up cooling breezes that dance down through the Swan Creek region. The rising mists from the distant Yadkin River’s flow frames our beautiful locale.  The weathering of these noble mountains over the millennia has left Swan Creek with a fertile schist-like soil, composed of rich minerals that feed and nourish outstanding vinifera wine grapes. The Vineyards of Swan Creek offer both French and Italian wine varieties along with a few unique local blends.  Follow the purple and green grape cluster signs to our beautiful vineyards; enjoy award-winning wines, magnificent mountains views, quiet country life and friendly wine people. We await your visit with colorful brochures and trail directions in hand, along with a bounty of information about Yadkin Valley wineries, events, festivals, restaurants, inns and places of interest.  The four local wineries include:  Laurel Gray Vineyards, Buck Shoals Vineyards, Raffaldini Winery, and Shadow Springs Vineyards.

Laurel Gray Vineyards - http://www.laurelgray.com/  - Southern hospitality with a touch of elegance is how many people describe Laurel Gray Vineyards. This family-owned and operated winery produces only estate-grown French wines. Located in the Swan Creek region of the Yadkin Valley, the Myer’s family has loved and nurtured this land for 10 generations. Laurel Gray’s tasting room and gift shop was once a milking parlor for dairy cattle in the 1930’s. In 2000, Benny and Kim Myers, along with their two children Ashley Laurel and Taylor Gray, undertook the task of restoring original farm buildings while establishing quality driven vineyards.  A beautiful covered back patio and herb garden overlook a spring-fed pond, vineyards, and a new 10,000 case winery that is reminiscent of a large horse stable. Old-timey gliders and rockers beckon you to relax on the tasting room’s spacious front porch, sip some wine, and breathe in the delicious scent of abundant seasonal flowers and Jackson-Perkins Tea Roses. Take an educational tour in our manicured vineyards and learn how award-winning wine begins in the field.  ESTATE GROWN WINES - Varietals: Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Pinot Gris - Blends: Scarlet Mountain (Merlot, Cabernet Franc), Sultry (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah), Rose’ 1773 (Stainless Chardonnay, Viognier, and Syrah)

Buck Shoals Vineyards - http://www.buckshoalsvineyard.com/  - Going back five generations! Buck Shoals Vineyards rolls across farmland that has been in the Crater family for five generations. The legacy of the name comes from Buck Shoals Creek, which meanders about two miles from the vineyard and runs alongside Crater Road. This creek was the home of Buck Shoals Mill, circa 1890, where grain and corn were stone ground by a water powered wheel and converted to flour, cornmeal and feed. The mill was built and run until the 1950's. The wooden mill was razed in the 1960's with only the dam, sluice and rock foundations remaining.  Owned by Terry and Joanne Crater, Buck Shoals Vineyard produces wines of the Bordeaux variety, growing eleven varieties but specializing in the Italian reds.  Buck Shoals Vineyard has expanded to include a distillery (a copper pot still) which will make brandies and some other spirits. The final Amarones (the raisin wine) are being developed with plans to also do a honey wine.  The elevation of 1150 feet and soil type at Buck Shoals is similar to many wine growing areas in Italy. You are welcome to pick and enjoy table grapes as you stroll along the path from the log cabin tasting room facility to the observation gazebo with its view of the Brushy Mountains facility.  The vineyard manager is Marty Crater, providing another set of hands to aid Joanne in vineyard and tasting room operations, while Terry provides farming expertise and overall management of the business and winery. Beauty also grows inside: A gallery of rare Raffaldini paintings and sculptures welcomes you upon entering the tasting room. The Raffaldini family’s rich heritage is displayed throughout the tasting room.  Our new two story villa, featuring both an upstairs and downstairs tasting room, an expanded Italian deli food case, balconies, piazza-style outdoor area and a breathtaking view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.  We grow 40+ acres of Italian vinifera wine grapes on our 100 acre estate. After a long and exhaustive search for land that would reflect the experience learned over centuries, Raffaldini Vineyards was established on Swan Creek land because the mountain soil and breezy climate produce grapes expressive of their sense of place, grapes carefully selected and hand-sorted throughout the growing season and again at harvest. This labor-intensive viticulture combined with skillful winemaking results in fine handcrafted Italian wines.  The Raffaldini family motto "Audentes Fortuna Iuvat" means "Fortune Favors the Daring.” The Latin phrase originated from Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’, written during the reign of Julius Caesar. For over 650 years, the Raffaldini Family has owned and continues to live on the farm where Virgil spent his youth, in Mantua, Italy. Fortune has favored the family as they have watched the Yadkin Valley grow and develop into a major destination point for residents and tourists alike. The founding members of Raffaldini Vineyards also live part-time on vineyard property and enjoy overlooking the valley of vines in the Swan Creek region of our state.  We welcome your visit! So, pack a picnic and enjoy our Italian wines as they should be—with food, friends, and family! Homemade crusty Italian bread and assorted Italian cheeses are currently available on weekends for dining al fresco on our expansive deck or in our scenic picnic areas. Live music and recorded Italian love songs float through the vines on festival afternoons, satisfying all of the senses at Raffaldini Vineyards.  We are open year-round and every month we celebrate at Raffaldini. Join us for our wine release events featuring contemporary Italian music, opera, folk and jazz. Or visit when our 750+ rose bushes are blooming under a canopy of native Italian flora.  "Buon Viaggio!" Shadow Springs Vineyard - website: http://www.shadowspringsvineyard.com/  - Shadow Springs Vineyard is family owned and operated by Chuck and Jamey Johnson.  Our vineyard got its name from the spring fed creek that splits the vineyard shadowed by large trees.  This creates a very peaceful setting.  The vineyard is a wonderful place to enjoy a day in the country with a great bottle of wine. We feel very fortunate to be raising grapes on this 50 acre farm.  The soil is rich and the climate is right for growing wine grapes.  In fact, you can adopt a piece of this lifestyle by adopting one of the grape vines.  We will have a program that will allow you to choose and adopt a vine.  We currently have close to 7,000 to pick from! Our tasting room will overlook the vineyard and a 2 ½ acre lake.  Current plans include ample space and state of the art technology for parties, receptions and business meetings.   To follow our progress visit our website http://www.shadowspringsvineyard.com/.  WINES AVAILABLE Varietals: Chardonnay, Viognier, Seyval Blanc, Merlot, Cab Franc - Blends: “Shadow Mist”, “Crimson Sunset”, “Fanciful” Sparkling Wine
